Moth Damage to Taxidermy
Moths are arguably the most prevalent of the insects that infest taxidermy; they inflict the most irreparable damage the fastest if left untreated. They are highly insidious as they are often hard to detect until it's too late. That is the benefit of having a professional closely inspect your trophies.
Dermestid Beetle Infestation
Dermestid beetles are the second most prevalent insect to infest taxidermy mounts. They are most often found on sheep as they are flesh eaters and sheep are more prone to having left over flesh around the horn bases. If the infestation is severe enough they can actually eat away at the bases of the horns and eat their way through the sheaths. All species can be affected by Dermestids however as different products used in taxidermy may attract them. They are most easily identified by the shed skins of the larvae that look like Rice Krispies on the outside of the hair on the affected animal.
